Mountains and the growth of an ecosystem

Week 16, January 10-14, 2022

Mountains and Island regions are often one of the first places we see primary succession, the birth of the biotic networks that form our ecology. We will review how new abiotic environments form and study the development to climax succession for several different biomes.

The mountains around us in the Comox Valley and in many places in BC are also the headwaters of the terrestrial systems at lower elevations and consequently have direct and indirect impacts on the health of these and even the estuarian systems. We will examine vegetation regions at higher elevations, the cryosphere and the impacts of aspect and geography.
